John Constable, managing director at STA Travel, explained how Rio de Janeiro and Cuzco in South America both boast plenty of options for those looking to help out and gain some experience.
"Adding a volunteering aspect to their round-the-world trip gives them the chance to see and experience some truly incredible things," he remarked.
There are many options for those hoping to spend time in such a manner, animal charities may seek help or schools and educational providers could need teachers or assistants for the classroom or playground.
Mr Constable stated some people choose to work in Borneo with orangutans, while others go back to school in South America where projects "are always in need of volunteers" for educational purposes.
Choosing where to enrol is something best done before leaving the UK and the expert states spending some time thinking about whether they want to work with animals, children, families or on a conservation project is something travellers should endeavour to do.
Arranging a sufficient backpacker insurance policy would be another essential move and customers should ensure it stretches to cover any activities they hope to undertake during the trip.
Research from TripAdvisor's annual Travel Trends Survey revealed 66 per cent of those asked are planning a long-haul holiday during 2011, which could result in them making arrangements to participate in a volunteering position as part of the excursion.
