BAA predicts more delays and cancellations

UK airports are likely to see more disruption

Ice and snow have caused significant travel chaos at UK airports.

Despite a brief reprieve from the snow and ice that has gripped the UK recently, flights operating to and from the country's airports are still suffering delays and cancellations.

Travel chaos is expected to continue as a result of snow that has been forecast for the coming days - BAA has stated it will continue to operate a reduced schedule at Heathrow Airport, while disruption is to be expected across the rest of its hubs.

Passengers intending to travel over the next few days have been advised to contact their airline to check whether their flights are due to depart at their advertised time - they should not arrive at the airport without first confirming whether they will be able to fly.

A live flight information board has been posted to BAA's website and ticketholders have been urged to check the status of their intended layover and the body states: "If the flight status shows 'contact airline', we're very sorry but your flight will not be operating today."

The ongoing chaos may have implications for holiday insurance policyholders hoping to get away - or visit family - over the Christmas break and they could do well to check their cover extends to cancelled or extensive delays.

But it is not just winter weather that is causing disruption for flights, as an announcement of intention of industrial action in Portugal has been issued for later today (December 22nd) and 28th when baggage handlers could walk out in protest. Passengers are advised to contact their tour operator for the latest information.
