Destinations have risen in popularity thanks to TV documentary.
Those who are on the lookout for trips to the poles should take a second to consider how extreme they want their holiday to be before they decide which one to travel to, according to one expert.
Adam Coulter, editor of Cruise-international.com, said that while many people may believe them to be much the same, they are in fact very different climates, and very different experiences to visit.
Mr Coulter said that while the Arctic circle is easily accessible and can make for a reasonably relaxing cruise, those who visit the Antarctic will face far more extreme conditions, in a setting he describes as "hardcore".
Both the Antarctic and Arctic have seen an increase in visitors and enquiries as of late, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), which said that David Attenborough's documentary Frozen Planet had served to increase the popularity of both destinations as tourist spots.
And Mr Coulter said that because of the varying packages available for people looking to visit these frozen wonderlands, the pricing allows a wide range of visitors to attend. He said that the price can be affordable for many, but can even stretch as far as being "staggeringly expensive" for those who wish to travel five-star.
Mr Coulter continued, saying that the best way for newcomers to experience the arctic or Antarctic is through the Hurtigruten, which also offers some of the best prices for those looking to buy travel insurance. With prices starting at just £1,500 per person, people can travel from Norway, and can visit some of the most accessible places around the Arctic circle.
