Annual travel insurance will cover domestic trips
Holidaymakers opting for a single trip travel insurance policy could be leaving themselves open to risk if taking additional breaks at home, one provider has warned.
Chris Rolland, head of American Express Insurance Services, said: "In the short term, a single trip policy may be tempting to cover the family's main holiday abroad because of the price, but they can then be left exposed if they also holiday within the UK."
He added that the cost of cancellation of a holiday in Britain could leave people out of pocket if they do not have an adequate level of travel insurance.
The company went on to say that taking out an annual holiday insurance policy will ensure that travellers are covered for trips at home, travel with business, and an overseas break with the family.
If holidaymakers are looking to make savings then taking out a European policy instead of a worldwide policy - if travel is not planned outside the continent - could be cheaper.
Moneysupermarket.com published research this week (July 27th) that indicated 12 per cent of people in the UK would consider cancelling an annual travel insurance policy in order to reduce their holiday spending.
