More people likely to take gap years to make themselves money before they head to university.
With tuition fees at universities across England and Wales having risen to £9,000 per year in 2011, many people who are now leaving school are taking the option of a gap year in order to make themselves some money before they head to university, to stop themselves falling further into debt.
However, according to one expert, there are an increasing number of other reasons why people will be buying travel insurance to head abroad on gap years, as they look further ahead in their future than even university.
"With continual intense competition in the graduate job market, many will travel abroad to gain invaluable experience and stand out from other candidates. Many students will also travel during their holiday to enhance their CV, in preparation of interviews," said Will Jones, marketing manager at Real Gap.
The expert said that his company was expecting a rise in those who are travelling overseas in order to gain themselves some vocational work experience or paid work in order to boost the credentials on their CV.
He said that the most popular kinds of destinations for those who are opting to take a gap year in 2012 and beyond will be the likes of Thailand and Australia, which are countries that are already pretty synonymous with gap year students.
He also said however that many people would be trying places which are off the beaten track, and offered up European destinations as different gap year options, as well as saying that Vietnam can be unexpectedly popular among those who are taking a year out.
Recently, Marcus Watts, managing director at Greenforce, said that there was set to be a sharp rise in the number of those who opt to take a year out due to tuition fees rising, with many people even taking the option of gaining themselves qualifications abroad.
