Advance bookings for holidays looking positive in the country.
There has been an unprecedented amount of interest in trekking holidays to Albania for next year, according to one of the UK's leading trek holiday companies.
Walks Worldwide has said that it has been surprised by how many people have been looking into its Accursed Mountains trekking holiday, and predicts that, with the high volume of advance bookings it has already taken, Albania could become the hotspot for holidaymakers in 2012.
Mark Knowles, who researches and creates the trekking holidays for Walks Worldwide, said that people who want something thrilling, and different, were always seeking out new places to go, and that Albania would oblige by providing them with stunning scenery.
"Serious trekkers are not like ordinary holidaymakers; they are far more adventurous and discerning, constantly seeking the next place which has yet to become popularised by the masses, hence Albania's attraction."
Trekking is not a holiday type suitable to the average holidaymaker. Such holidays can be challenging and treacherous, and require good travel insurance in case of injury.
"Europe's last great trekking secret is out; the Accursed Mountains are spectacular, unspoiled and virtually impenetrable, except for a series of high passes that link the few farmsteads of the Albanian Highlanders to the outside world. This remote area of Europe can easily be compared with more far-flung and exotic destinations, including the lesser-trekked regions of the Himalaya," added Mr Knowles.
The treks in the country are graded as demanding, withwalking up to four hours a day not uncommon, and height of up to 2,000 metres commonplace.
