Britons have been urged to ensure they have adequate protection against airline failure this Christmas.
Holidaymakers travelling via air over the Christmas period should check they are covered for airline failure, it has been advised.
According to ProtectMyHoliday, some airlines' worsening financial situations may mean that more firms could be at risk of collapse over the next few months.
The warning comes shortly after AA Travel Insurance recommended that those taking Christmas flights should ensure they take out
holiday insurance policies that cover airline failure.
"We predict well over half of travellers leaving the UK will be without financial protection over the festive period," commented ProtectMyHoliday sales and marketing manager Michael Ward.
The ATOL scheme that covers airline failure only applies to package deals and not holidays where flights and accommodation are booked separately.
"Fares also increase over [the Christmas] period and people seem oblivious to the risk they are taking," Mr Ward added.
British Airways recently announced a loss of £401 million for the last year.
According to the International Air Transport Association, total financial losses within the airline industry could reach 11 billion (£9.9 billion) by the end of 2009.
