Nearly three quarters of travellers are unaware about South Africa's cash restriction laws
With just 23 days to go until the football World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg, Sainsbury's has today (May 18th) launched a special Cash Passport to help fans manage their finances in South Africa.
Nearly half a million Brits visit South Africa every year and many more will flock to the country this year to support England in football's most prestigious tournament.
However, research published today by Sainsbury's shows that 74 per cent of people thinking about making the journey were not aware that South African law restricts the amount of cash tourists can take into the country to 5,000 rand, the equivalent of around £445.
Any amount over this limit could be confiscated at customs, leaving travellers short of cash for the rest of their trip. But Sainsbury's specialist currency card allows tourists to pre-load their account with up to 85,000 rand before leaving home.
Taking out
travel insurance to protect against theft and loss of personal possessions is also advisable before making the journey to the southern hemisphere.
