Workers on the London Underground are planning a walkout this evening (January 14th).
People planning to use the
London Underground (LU) this evening might experience commuter misery.
A 24-hour walkout is scheduled to begin at 21:00 GMT on January 14th after two workers were reportedly "victmised", the BBC reports.
The action has been spearheaded by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), which states the staff at the centre of discussions were unfairly dismissed.
The Bakerloo and Northern lines are expected to see disruption as a result of the action that could affect retail staff and shoppers throughout the Saturday shopping hours.
LU chief operating officer Howard Collins said: "For the RMT leadership to try to disrupt Londoners in this way shows a complete disregard for Tube passengers."
Controversy is rife about the decision to strike as LU has revealed just one-third of the workers on the Bakerloo line voted in favour of the industrial action.
However, this may not be the last of the commuter misery expected on the LU, as holiday insurance policyholders hoping to enjoy the celebrations could face more action in April to coincide with the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The train driver's union Aslef says there is a "remote chance" that the action could take place on April 29th, in a row about bank holiday pay, the broadcaster has stated.
London mayor Boris Johnson has hit back at the suggestion by pointing out the possibility that driverless trains could overcome the travel chaos.
A similar arrangement already exists on the Docklands Light Railway and Mr Johnson believes staff could be trained to man the carriages "in a matter of a few weeks".
