2012 will be a fantastic year to holiday at home

People will opt to stay home to cut down on the costs of breaks.

People in the UK will increasingly feel the need to holiday at home throughout 2012, as the cost of going overseas increases, and the finances of many continue to be squeezed.

However, according to one expert, this does not need to be a bad thing, as 2012 will be a fantastic year for holidaying at home, due to the vast array of activities on offer for British travel insurance customers.

Laura Smith, destination public relations manager at VisitEngland, said that because England is well known for its less than perfect weather, many destinations and holiday organisers are often prepared for it, meaning that there will always be an array of activities available.

"From museums and galleries, to aquariums, there is a whole range of things to do to suit all ages and personalities. If rain has stopped a zoo visit, you could consider an aquarium or natural history museum. Or replace a countryside walk with a trip to the Eden Project or the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm," she said.

Ms Smith said that 2012 will be a vibrant year for British tourism, with a wide array of activities, such as cultural events which are linked to the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, amongst other events and exhibitions.

Last week, VisitEngland also said that people can enjoy many activities in the UK without having to even spend much money. It said that those who are holidaying on a tight budget can find themselves with lots to do, including visiting museums and art galleries for free around the country.

Ms Smith also said that there will be many unique events in England this year, such as the Bond in Motion event at the National MotorMuseum in Beaulieu, or the one of a kind Husky race at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire.
