2 missionaries arrested for undermining the country's Muslim government
05 Dec 2008
Two Christian missionaries from Britain are behind bars in Gambia after being charged with undermining the country's Muslim government. The couple, who have lived in the West African country for 12 years, appeared in court in the capital Banjul on sedition charges. The pair, who are dedicated to spreading the message of Christianity, were arrested last week when police came to their home.
The man is a former army major and is in custody outside of Banjul in a high-security former colonial jail. His 46-year-old wife is being held with their two-year-old adopted daughter at a police station in the capital. The pair have been offered bail - on condition four Gambian property owners would vouch for them - which they have not yet managed to find. Their arrest has sparked concern after reports other prisoners on similar charges have been poisoned while in Gambia's jails. Whilst the country is constitutionally secular, the population is 90% Muslim and according to a friend of the couple it is dangerous to speak out.
