Two students from Ramkhamhaeng University shot
05 Sep 2008
Two students from Ramkhamhaeng University were shot and wounded while on their way to a protest at Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's residence on 4 September 2008. Two armed men on a motorcycle fired on a group of more than 100 protesters associated with the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) despite the fact that police officers were providing security for the protesters. The injured students were transported to the Srisiam Hospital where they were said to be in good condition. A pro-democracy student association later rallied in front of the Royal Thai Police headquarters to demand that police officials locate the gunmen. The students met at Paragon Shopping Center at approximately 1400 local time before marching to the police station. Police officials closed the headquarters' main gate, but did not interact with the protesters.
Protests continued at the Government House and the stronghold of the PAD, the Makkawan Bridge, on 5 September, despite severe weather conditions, which flooded the Government House and caused temporary housing set up by the protesters to collapse.
Meanwhile, emerging reports on 5 September indicated that Samak could revoke the state of emergency in Bangkok within the next two days. Historically, states of emergency in Thailand last for three months; however, Samak stated that he will not impose restrictions for that length of time. Meanwhile, the Senate joined the House of Representatives in voting in favor of a referendum, which could be held within the next 30 days. In addition, several top lawmakers have agreed to mediate between the PAD and the government without antagonizing the situation.
