Tensions remain high in Bangkok

20 May 2010
Tensions remain high in Bangkok on 20 May 2010. The city did not experience the same level of violence overnight as on 19 May, although there was at least one additional incident of arson early on 20 May, which targeted the Big C Ratchadamri shopping center; in all 35 buildings have been set on fire in the capital since the rioting began on 19 May. Government officials claim that the situation is largely under control, but warned of opportunistic attacks by violent individuals. A curfew in Bangkok and 23 other provinces was extended for three days (until the morning of 23 May) in an effort to combat additional unrest. Authorities reduced the hours of the curfew, which will now be in force between 2100 and 0500 local time (the original hours were 2000 to 0600). Banks, which were previously scheduled to remain closed through the weekend, will reopen on 21 May. Security forces continued operations against United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters. Troops battled a group of "red shirts" at Bangkok's Pathumwanaram overnight. At least eight casualties were reported in the clashes. The standoff is reportedly over, although 500-600 protesters remain at the temple. In a separate incident, a mob of more than 100 protesters assembled at the Victory Monument in Bangkok where they harassed two police officers; however, no violence was reported. Three more UDD leaders surrendered to authorities on the afternoon of 20 May, further weakening the central leadership of the protesters.
