Opposition (PAD) announce that it will not accept country's new prime minister

18 Sep 2008
The opposition People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has announced that it will not accept Somchai Wongsawat as the country’s new prime minister; Somchai is the brother-in-law of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (who was ousted in a 2006 coup) and was elected to the position on 17 September by the Parliament. The PAD has stated that it will continue with its protest campaign, but did not specify whether its supporters would attempt to stage disruptive demonstrations similar to ones that have occurred recently. Meanwhile, Thai authorities are bolstering the security presence in Bangkok in preparation for both pro- and anti-government protests scheduled to take place in the capital on 19 September. The exact venue for the demonstrations was not announced, but they will likely take place near the Government House in the downtown area.
