Clashes between protesters and security forces escalates

14 May 2010
Clashes between protesters and security forces escalated in Bangkok on 14 May 2010, as soldiers proceeded to shut off the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protest area and "red shirt" activists attempted to prevent them from doing so. Violence occurred in several locations, including along Wireless Road, Rama IV road and at Lumphini Park. Security forces first used tear gas and water cannons and then proceeded to fire rubber bullets and live ammunition. Protesters responded by throwing rocks and launching home-made rockets toward the security forces. Protesters also seized and torched army vehicles. At least one person was killed in the clashes, while an unknown number of people suffered injuries, including a French journalist and two Thai cameramen, who were shot. The U.S. and U.K. embassies, which are located in the area affected by the violence, remained closed on 14 May. BTS (sky train) and MRT (subway) services in the area have been suspended.
