Earthquake Strikes Pamir Mountains Region Leaving Thousands Homeless

On 2 January 2010 an earthquake struck the Pamir Mountains region of Tajikistan, leaving thousands homeless and without power. The initial 5.2 magnitude quake reportedly destroyed thousands of mud and brick homes in the Vanch district of southeastern Tajikistan, affecting up to 20,000 people. Authorities stated that although there have been no reports of any significant injuries, communication and transportation links have been cut to the hardest-hit areas.
