Tropical Storm Kalmaegi made landfall on southern Taiwan

On 17 July 2008 Tropical Storm Kalmaegi made landfall on southern Taiwan, causing several flash floods and mudslides. At least six people were killed and at least seven others are missing. More than 650,000 homes were left without water due to severe flooding in several areas; Kaohsiung and Tainan were the most heavily affected. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the storm continued toward southern China, traveling northwest with maximum sustained winds of 58 mph/50 kt and gusts of 75 mph/65 kt. The storm is expected to continue to move northwest for approximately 24 hours before it shifts direction to the northeast, where it will continue to diminish in strength as it approaches South Korea.
