THOUSANDS EVACUATED AHEAD OF TYPHOON

More than 6,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas in southern Taiwan on 5 October 2009 as the country prepared to bear the brunt of Typhoon Parma. Government authorities ordered mandatory evacuations in Pingtung and Kaohsiung counties and set up emergency shelters to house those who have left their homes.
