100's MISSING AS VILLAGE HIT BY MUDSLIDE
11 Aug 2009
Around 100 villagers are feared to have been buried alive by a mudslide triggered by Typhoon Mokarot in the remote village of Hisaolin. Rescue services said another 420 people are still missing. Helicopters have dropped rescuers into the village to try to save anybody who may still be alive.
The rain and mudslides have completely wiped out houses in the Kaohsiung county, and flooding is so bad that almost all land travel is impossible.
The storm has caused the worst flooding in Taiwan in half a century, with the death toll outside the stranded village standing at 38.
Over the weekend, almost three metres of rain fell across the Asian island.
