Police & youths clash in Malmo
19 Dec 2008
Clashes between youths and police officers continued in the Rosengard district of Malmo during the overnight hours on 18-19 December 2008. Protesters hurled homemade explosives and rocks at police officers, and set vehicles and trash bins on fire. At least 20 people were detained in connection with the violence, but there were no reports of injuries. The unrest was sparked by the closing of a local Islamic center and the subsequent eviction of squatters from the building. Rioting initially broke out on 15 December and has continued nightly since then.
