Two men were killed when they attempted to bomb the Lozitha Bridge
22 Sep 2008
According to reports on 22 September 2008 two men were killed when they attempted to bomb the Lozitha Bridge, located near one of Swaziland's royal palaces. The men were apparently killed when the explosive went off prematurely. Swazi authorities also stated that a South African man has been detained on suspicions that he was also involved in the attempted attack on King Mswati III's palace in the capital, Mbabane; reports indicate that the man will be tried for treason.
Meanwhile, Swazi authorities are still holding several union leaders who had planned a protest at the South African border ahead of Swaziland's parliamentary election on 19 September. Pro-democracy advocates also held two days of violent protests in the run up to the election, demanding a transition to multi-party democracy. Swaziland is one of the world's last remaining absolute monarchies, and King Mswati III has been criticized for his refusal to adopt democratic reforms. Official results from the election are expected on 22 September, but the results are unlikely to change the country's political make up.
