FLOODING BRINGS KHARTOUM TO A STANDSTILL

Torrential rains triggered flooding in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on 27 August 2009, causing casualties and disrupting traffic throughout the city. Municipal authorities stated that at least one person was killed and three others were seriously injured due to the inclement weather. The casualties were a result of roofs collapsing, as many buildings in Khartoum are made of weak material that cannot withstand heavy rains. Officials in the city also stated that vehicle traffic has come to a virtual standstill, as many roadways have become flooded
