26 Jan 2009
On 25 January 2009 government troops retook Mullaittivu, the last major town controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The troops gained complete control over the town by the evening hours. Authorities stated that they had met some resistance, but the operation proceeded well on the whole. The LTTE gained control of the town in July 1996.
