21 Jul 2008
The Basque separatist group ETA staged a series of bombings in northern Spain on 20 July 2008. The first bomb exploded at approximately 0500 local time (0300 UTC) near a Barclays Bank branch in the Basque town of Getxo. Approximately five hours later, a caller claiming to speak on the behalf of ETA warned that four additional bombings would take place in Laredo and Noja, which are both located in the province of Cantabria. As warned, a bomb exploded in Laredo at the city's beachfront promenade at 1220 local time (1020 UTC). In Noja, two separate explosions occurred, both at the beach. The first bomb exploded at approximately 1300 local time (1100 UTC) and was followed by the second approximately an hour later. The fourth bomb exploded at a golf course in the city at approximately 1500 local time (1300 UTC). Laredo and Noja are popular destinations frequented by tourists. However, due to rainy weather, the beaches were abandoned and no casualties were reported.
