Three separate car bombings attributed to ETA
22 Sep 2008
Three separate car bombings attributed to the militant separatist group ETA occurred in northern Spain on 21 and 22 September 2008. The first took place in Vitoria, the capital of the Basque region. Authorities had received a phone call warning of the blast, allowing them to clear the targeted area, and no injuries were reported.
The second explosion occurred at 0430 local time (0230 UTC) on 21 September outside a police station in the town of Ondarroa. Officials received no warning call prior to the blast. Seven people -- including four civilians -- sustained injuries in the attack and were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
The third bomb was detonated outside a military academy in the town of Santona, which is located in the Cantabria area near the Basque region, early on 22 September. Authorities received a warning call approximately 35 minutes prior to the explosion, which killed one soldier and wounded at least 10 other people.
