Snow shuts Madrid Airport
09 Jan 2009
Heavy snowfall in Madrid brought operations at Madrid Barajas International Airport (LEMD/MAD) to a halt on 9 January 2009. Airport operators stated that all flights were halted from 1150 local time (1050 UTC) and are not expected to resume until at least 2100 local time (2000 UTC). The National Meteorology Institute (NMI) reported that an additional 4 in/10 cm of snow is expected to fall on Madrid on 9 January, which could force additional delays or cancellations. Reports also indicated that the weather severely disrupted ground transportation in the city, as well.
