Police believe ETA are planning large scale attacks
31 Jul 2008
Security officials warned on 30 July 2008 that the separatist group ETA may be planning a large-scale attack in the Basque region. Officials stated that the "imminent" attack was being plotted to take place during the region's fiesta celebrations over the summer, possibly targeting public festivities where there will likely be a large number of both civilians and police officers.
Security officials recently arrested 11 suspected members of the ETA's Vizcaya cell, but have warned that the group -- which has been responsible for many previous attacks -- seems to still be operable and may have access to light-activated bomb detonators. The arrests apparently thwarted a planned attack on a police target in Getxo that was to take place on 31 July. Police officials are currently seeking to the two remaining members of the cell and have increased security.
