BOMB EXPLOSION AT PALMA BEACH RESORT

A bomb detonated outside a Civil Guard barracks building in the Palmanova beach resort area, located on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea, shortly before 1400 local time (1200 UTC) on 30 July 2009. At least two Civil Guard personnel were killed and several other people were injured in the blast. The explosion occurred near a police vehicle, but it is not known if the device had been planted on the vehicle or placed nearby. The two fatalities were reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the explosion. Palmanova is located approximately 6 mi/10 km southwest of Palma, the island's main city. The barracks where the blast occurred is located approximately 550 yd/500 m from a beach that is popular with tourists and several kilometers away from the Marivent palace, which is used by the Spanish Royal family. So far, there is no indication whether there were foreigners among the injured.
