Potential for nationwide transport strike
10 Jun 2009
The Korea Cargo Transport Workers’ Union stated that it will stage a strike on 11 June 2009 to protest the cancellation of contracts for nearly 100 union workers. More than 15,000 registered truck drivers, and potentially 150,000 unregistered truck drivers, are expected to participate in the strike and other workers have indicated that they will follow suit. This raises the potential for a nationwide transportation strike, which will negatively affect transportation in the country. Union leaders stated that they will halt cargo transportation, disrupt transportation on major highways and stop port operations, if the contracts are not reinstated.
