Passenger jet makes emergency landing at Port Elizabeth Airport

A 1Time passenger jet aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at the Port Elizabeth Airport (FAPE/PLZ) after an engine caught fire in mid-air on 12 January 2009. Reports indicate that the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft's left engine failed approximately 10 minutes into the flight (1320 local time/ 1120 UTC) from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, causing the aircraft to tilt. The aircraft was at an altitude of 10,000 ft/3,050 m at the time of the incident. Although there were no reports of injuries, eyewitnesses stated that several people suffered from shock after returning to Port Elizabeth. The passengers then departed on another flight to Johannesburg at 1915 local time (1715 UTC).
