Nelson Mandela Bay taxi drivers go on strike

Taxi drivers in the Eastern Cape's Nelson Mandela Bay went on strike on 9 February 2009, stranding thousands of commuters in the city. Bus drivers also refused to operate, fearing intimidation and violence from the taxi drivers. The strike is another in a series of actions to protest the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit System in the municipality. The drivers have stated that they will continue to strike until the government listens to their demands.
