Johannesburg airport workers hold a peaceful protest
30 Jun 2010
On 30 June 2010 airport workers held a peaceful protest at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport (FAJS/JNB). Reports indicate that approximately 180 cleaning and retail workers participated in the demonstration to protest claims that their employer pocketed bonuses FIFA granted them for working during the World Cup. However, both the workers' employer and the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) deny that FIFA gave the workers bonuses and accused their union, the South African Aviation and Allied Workers Union (SAAAW), of misleading them. The protesters initially gathered at the terminal building, but peacefully dispersed when authorities intervened. There was no violence during the demonstration, and airport operations were not affected.
