Heavy rain hit by flash flooding

27 Feb 2009
Heavy rains caused flash flooding across Soweto, Gauteng province. Several vehicles became trapped on bridges in the Johannesburg township when the Klip River burst its banks between Orlando and Dube. At least three people have been killed and many others have been injured; approximately 200 families have also been displaced. Affected areas in Soweto include Mofolo, Dobonsville, Dube, Orlando and Meadowlands. Emergency services are distributing food and blankets to the displaced and are setting up emergency shelters. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Johannesburg's northern suburbs also damaged roads and disrupted traffic. The South African Weather Service reported that additional thunderstorms are expected in the coming days.
