Bus blockade Johannesburg bridge
01 Apr 2009
Bus owners and drivers used approximately 40 buses to blockade the Harrison Street bridge in the Johannesburg central business district on 1 April 2009. The bus operators were protesting the recent closure of the Cross Border Bus Terminal, which is located at the intersection of Bree and Harrison streets. An estimated 60 to 70 buses used the facility before the city canceled the lease at midnight on 1 April. Police officers immediately responded to the protest and ordered the buses to move to the side of the road in order to minimize disruption to traffic in the area. There were no reports of violence or arrests during the protest
