19 Nov 2008
Several bombs exploded outside the offices of the local government in the town of Belet Hawa in southern Somalia on 19 November 2008. Authorities stated that at least two security guards were killed and nine other people were injured when unidentified attackers hurled several bombs at the building. Although the attackers fled quickly following the attack, local reports identified Islamist militants as the likely perpetrators. Belet Hawa lies near the border with Kenya in a rural area of Somalia where government forces have battled a fierce militant insurgency.
