African Union troops and Somali soldiers fought with insurgents
29 Sep 2008
African Union troops and Somali soldiers fought with insurgents on the streets of Mogadishu on 29 September 2008. Authorities stated that at least four people, including some civilians, have been killed in the gun battles, which began over the weekend. The recent clash is the latest in a round of violence that erupted on 27 September when Islamist militants launched a mortar attack at Mogadishu Airport (HCMM/MGQ). Reports indicate that fighting has erupted in many neighborhoods in Mogadishu, including Villa Baidoa and the Holwadag district. Local Somali troops have been reinforced by the presence of African Union forces and soldiers from neighboring Ethiopia.
