Lufthansa cargo airline crashes

A Lufthansa Airlines MD-11 cargo aircraft was involved in a mishap while landing at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport (OERK/RUH) at approximately 1200 local time on 27 July 2010. The majority of reports indicate that the aircraft -- flight 8460 en route from Frankfurt to Riyadh -- made a “hard landing,” at which time it broke in half and caught fire. However, conflicting reports state that the pilots reported a fire onboard while approaching Riyadh and that the aircraft broke in half after it landed. The two pilots were injured in the incident, but there were no reported fatalities, and ground personnel were able to extinguish the fire shortly thereafter. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.
