PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS PLAN A NUMBER OF STRIKES

Public sector workers are staging a strike in Romania on 5 October 2009. Approximately 750,000-800,000 workers in the health, education, public administration and police sectors are participating in the strike, which was called by the Alliance of State Workers over laws implemented to control budget spending that affected wages, firings and forced leaves. The strike has resulted in the closure of schools and the limitation of available medical services. A rally is planned in Bucharest on 7 October; a warning strike is also scheduled for 23 October, ahead of an indefinite strike beginning on 28 October.
