60 dead in train derailment
22 Jun 2010
A passenger train en route from Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville derailed and plunged into a ravine late on 21 June 2010. Reports indicate that the train was travelling on the Chemin de Fer Congo Ocean (CFCO) line when the derailing took place near Yanga, approximately 37 mi/60 km east of Pointe-Noire. At least 60 people were killed and several hundred more were seriously injured in the incident. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, but believe that the train likely derailed as it went around a sharp bend.
