UK holidays more popular than ever

From cultural city breaks to relaxing family holidays by the sea, the credit crisis has made holidays closer to home more popular than ever this Easter.

In London, a recent survey by ALVA (the Association of Leading Visitor Attraction) showed that the British Museum was their most popular member last year with 5.93m visits, 9.5% more than in 2007. It was followed by Tate Modern, the National Gallery and the Natural History Museum.

Although most medical emergencies will be taken care of by the NHS, without insurance, travellers can be left out of pocket if redundancy, family illness, or jury service means they cannot travel.

So what are the real risks facing the British public? Direct Travel Insurance discloses its 2008 claims figures for UK breaks.

2008 UK claims figures:

  • Over 150 UK claims were made, mostly relating to theft, mugging, lost luggage, cancellations and medical reasons
  • Cancellations of holidays in the UK: £1,074 was claimed on average per person
  • Delayed or lost luggage: £805 was claimed on average per person
  • Direct Travel Insurance ten day Standard cover costs £11 for a family of four, including cancellation, personal money and personal possessions cover. More options are available online.
