Direct Travel Insurance’s figures for claims made during last year’s Valentine’s weekend are a reminder of the potential risks of going away without adequate travel insurance, even for a short break.
Those travelling with insufficient or with no travel cover may find themselves out of pocket, should a similar incident happen.
Cost of claims made on average per person between 12 and 16 February 2009:
£399 was claimed as a result of an accident
£752 was claimed for cancelling a trip (£628 was caused by a redundancy)
£291 was claimed for damaged or stolen clothes
£188 was claimed as a result of a back injury
Jonathan Hewett, Vice President - Consumer Marketing at Direct Travel Insurance said: “Travellers should perceive travel insurance as part and parcel of the cost of their holiday. The price of a good cover is very small when you consider the cost of replacing stolen items and medical bills. I would advise those who are planning a holiday to consider carefully what they wish to be covered for, even if they are travelling on a shoe string.”
Direct Travel Insurance five-day European travel insurance including cancellation cover and personal possession cover costs £7 per person.
