TROPICAL STORM REMAINS NEAR NORTHERN PHILIPPINES

Tropical Storm Parma remains near the coast of the northern Philippines on 7 October 2009, bringing heavy rains to the area for a third consecutive day. Residents in the area were warned of landslides and additional flooding. The storm was located approximately 240 mi/380 km north-northeast of Manila. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph/35 kt and gusts of up to 52 mph/45 kt. According to meteorologists, Parma could weaken and dissipate as it remains over Luzon. If the storm does not dissipate, it is forecast to move west to west-northwest toward the northern South China Sea. The storm would then be expected to strengthen.
