Tropical storm kills at least eight

Tropical Storm Nangka has today moved over the central and northern Philippines. The storm caused flooding, landslides and power outages, forced the coast guard to suspend sea travel and caused at least eight deaths. Nangka is moving north-northwest at approximately 13 mph/11 kt and is located approximately 215 mi/345 km northwest of Manila. Nangka will gain strength in the next 24 hours as it moves over the South China Sea, but is expected to weaken again before it makes landfall east of Hong Kong in the next 36 to 72 hours. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 52 mph/45 kt, with gusts of up to 63 mph/55 kt.
