FURTHER TYPHOON HEADING TOWARDS THE PHILIPPINES
16 Oct 2009
Typhoon Lupit is tracking toward the Philippines at 17 mph/15 kt. Lupit, which is located approximately 290 mi/465 km north-northwest of Yap, is expected to continue its west-northwesterly track for the next 24 hours before being stalled by a low pressure system. The storm will then advance on its previous course by 19 October. Current maximum sustained winds are 75 mph/65 kt, with gusts of up to 90 mph/80 kt.
The Philippine National Disaster Coordinating Council issued warnings to residents of Luzon and Visayas to prepare for the impending storm. Officials advised residents in flood zones to move to safer ground while there was still time to prepare. Previous storms Ketsana (Ondoy) and Parma (Pepeng) caused millions of dollars in damage and killed hundreds on Luzon Island.
