Former police officer takes a bus full of Chinese tourists and Philippine tour employees hostage in Manila.

On 23 August 2010 a former police officer who was reportedly dismissed on charges of extortion and assault took a bus full of Chinese tourists and Philippine tour employees hostage in Manila. The former officer boarded the bus at Rizal Park armed with an M-16 assault rifle, holding 25 passengers hostage while SWAT members surrounded the bus. The officer was reportedly demanding to be reinstated to his post of senior inspector. The stand-off eventually ended after approximately 10 hours, when police officers shot and killed the hostage taker following an unsuccessful attempt to storm the bus. Reports indicate that at least eight hostages were seen getting out of the bus, while nine hostages had been released earlier. Unofficial reports indicate that six of the 15 hostages were killed and at least one civilian was injured as commandos attempted to storm the bus.
