CENTRAL LUZON & METRO MANILA LIKELY TO BE HEAVILY IMPACTED BY TYPHOON

29 Oct 2009
Typhoon Mirinae continues to move closer to the Philippines. The storm is expected to move over the northern island of Luzon over the next 36 to 48 hours. This morning Mirinae was located approximately 645 mi/1,037 km east of Manila and had maximum sustained wind speeds of 104 mph/90 kt; however, the system is expected to slightly weaken over the next 24 hours. According to the current path, Central Luzon and Metro Manila could be heavily impacted, and flashfloods and landslides are expected. Approximately 140 trucks carrying relief goods have been deployed to areas of Luzon in preparation. Officials have also recommended that at least four dams with critical levels release water ahead of the storm.
