TRANSPORT STRIKE CAUSES LEAVES THOUSANDS STRANDED

01 Jul 2009
Authorities arrested more than 100 people in Lima during a national transport strike organised by unions that rejected new transport regulations that went into effect on 1 July. Taxi and bus drivers participated in the strike, which left thousands of commuters stranded and halted commercial activities. Protesters organised a march which led to violent clashes with anti-riot police officers, In the Villa El Salvador neighbourhood demonstrators threw rocks at buses and taxis, causing police officers to fire their guns in the air as a warning. Demonstrators also organised several roadblocks throughout the capital, blocking the Central Highway. Union leaders claim that approximately 60,000 transportation workers will continue with the strike, and that a new strike will be held from 7-9 July until the group's demands are met.
