STRONG EARTHQUAKE STRIKES SOUTHERN PERU

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck southern Peru's Cuzco province on 12 July 2009. The quake was initially reported to have a magnitude of 6.0, but was later downgraded. The quake occurred at 0112 local time (0612 UTC) at a depth of 116 mi/187 km. It was centered approximately 120 mi/190 km northeast of Arequipa. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the area
