Southern Peru hit by 6.1 earthquake

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck southern Peru at approximately 0913 UTC on 8 July 2008. The quake's epicenter was located 33 mi/53 km northwest of Arequipa, the nation's second largest city, at a depth of 46 mi/74 km. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, but some isolated power outages occurred. The provinces of Moquegua and Tacna reportedly felt the quake, and some citizens in Arequipa have refused to re-enter their homes due to fear of aftershocks.
