Protesters burn down police station
30 Oct 2008
On 29 October 2008 thousands of people protested against President Alan Garcia's administration. Protesters burned down a police station in the San Martin province and threatened politicians who are part of the president's Cabinet. Protesters in the Tacna and Moquegua provinces demanded a fair share of the taxes that local mines produce. Demonstrators in the Cuzco province protested to prevent a mining company from taking needed water, and demonstrators in Cajamarca demanded a new highway. The government stated that violent protests will not be tolerated and talks on the demands will only begin when the protests stop.
